AI video editors, compared edit by edit

An AI video editor makes a list of decisions for you: where to cut, how to frame, what to caption, what to clean up. This site sets out what those decisions are, how the editors differ on features and export, and where each kind of tool fits.

The edits an AI editor typically makes
EventSourceEditNote
001 Interview, camera A Cut Pauses, false starts and filler words found from the audio and trimmed.
002 Interview, camera B Reframe Wide frame cropped to vertical, the crop following the speaker.
003 Generated cutaway Insert Footage made from a text prompt and cut in over the dialogue.
004 Dialogue track Clean Background noise reduced and voice levels evened between shots.
005 Transcript Caption Subtitles written from the speech and styled on screen.

What to compare between editors

Feature lists look alike. These are the places where editors differ once a project is under way.

EventFeatureEditWhat to look at
006 Automatic cutting Check Whether every cut it makes stays visible and adjustable, or arrives baked into the clip.
007 Transcript editing Check The languages it transcribes, speaker labels, and how it copes with people talking over each other.
008 Captions Check Caption styling, line length and timing controls, and export as a separate subtitle file.
009 Reframing Check Aspect-ratio presets and whether you can correct the crop where the tracking loses its subject.
010 Generative edits Check Which edits are generated, how results are labelled, and the usage terms attached to them.
011 Export Check Resolutions, frame rates, watermarks on free plans, and export of the project rather than only the video.
012 Team features Check Shared projects, review comments, brand templates and version history for more than one editor.

Common uses

Where AI editing earns its place

  • Short social clips

Cutting a long recording into vertical clips with captions, where turnaround matters more than fine control.

  • Talking-head video

Interviews, podcasts on video and webinars, where transcript editing and filler removal save the most time.

  • Training and product video

Screen recordings and walkthroughs that need tidy audio, captions and the same look across a series.

  • The first assembly

A rough cut of a longer project, built quickly and then finished by hand in a full editor.

Limits

What it will not do for you

  • It edits by ear

Most automatic cutting reads speech and silence. Music edits, montages and footage without dialogue get much less out of it.

  • Transcripts need checking

Names, specialist terms and crosstalk are where transcription errors gather, and every error reaches the captions.

  • Footage may leave your machine

Browser-based editors process video on their own servers. Read the data terms before uploading client or personal footage.

  • Generated footage has terms

Generated and altered footage can carry usage terms of its own, and some platforms ask for it to be labelled.

Comparisons are on the way

Comparisons of individual editors will appear here as they are published. Our story explains who runs the site in the meantime.
